(BROADSIDES - POPULAR ENTERTAINMENT) [Peak Family]
At Methodist Church, Augusta … The Original and Only Peak Family. Vocalists, Harpists, and Swiss Bell Ringers.[N.p., s.n. internally dated 1866.] Broadside, (24 by 8¾ inches), printed on wove paper. Illustrated. Former folds, light creases, near fine.
A handsome illustrated broadside for the Peak Family’s 1866 tour; in this instance a performance at a Methodist church in Augusta [Maine? Georgia? Illinois?]. Swiss bell ringers, the Peak Family toured the United States with their pure toned bells and packed full houses with their elegant and delicate music. When their career terminated after thirty years in 1869 (three years from this performance date) it was claimed that the family had accumulated a million and a half dollars from their entertainment. This broadside offers the interesting insight that “Magnificent Photographs of the Troupe [could] be seen at the Post Office” (an interesting use of public space) and, additionally, photographs of the performers were “sold at the Stage after the Concert.”
Not on OCLC, only scattered copies of unique broadsides of the group’s performances.
