(ASTRONOMY)
Transparent Solar System, Displaying the Planets with their Orbits ... as known at the Present Day. Derived from the “Heavens Illustrated” in a Series of Plates, &c.London: Shepherd & Sutton, Foster Lane, Cheapside; And Sold by All Booksellers and Stationers, [1844 ?]. Broadside format, stiff card leaf with strong letterpress printing. Verso with mounted sheet with hand-coloring in red, blue, green, and yellow to create a “hold-to-light” effect when viewed from the front. The fr Light soiling; left and right edges slightly softened and worn, but with no loss of text.
An excellent survival and, plainly put, a fun survival, documenting the popularization of astronomy in mid-19th century England.
OCLC records a single entry under the imprint of J. Reynolds, held by an Australian institution. COPAC records the British Library only giving a date attribution of 1844. Shepherd & Sutton appear to be most active in the 1830’s and 1840’s and we find the 1844 date attribution reasonable given that Heavens Illustrated is found to be published in 1844 in London by R. Groombridge.
