(CALIFORNIA – MINING) [D. J. Moore]

Collection of five autograph letters signed from D.J. Moore discussing mining efforts in Calaveras County, California: Angels Camp, Murphy’s Camp, Indian Creek, and Naragansett.

Five handwritten letters, three 8vo and two quarto, closely dated between May 4th, 1887 and May 11th 1887 all to one individual, “Friend Charles.” Approximately eight pages in all. Light tanning, old paper clip rust stains, very good.
Angels Camp in Calaveras, California is about ten miles southeast of San Andreas. Readers of literature will be amused to know that Mark Twain’s story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog from of Calaveras County” (1865) was purportedly based on a story he heard at the Angels Hotel in Angels Camp. Murphy’s Camp [i.e. Murphys] was a gold rich mining location with almost $20 million dollars in gold discovered in the region. Indian Creek is about 7 miles southeast of San Andreas. D. J. Moore writes of his “Indian Creek business” and of securing deeds for a mill site and fixing bonds. He notes the difficulties finding a place to board in Indian Creek, finally determining: “I might get board with the Dago, but must find my own blankets.” In addition securing timber is a priority and Moore confides to his friend: “I think the business is more money than you think, but if you feel like taking the chances [i.e. spending money on the timber and logging] I will go ahead.” Also noted is that the San Andreas sheriff Ben Tomas closed the Kelly Mine and mill on attachment for an unpaid lumber bill of $800. Moore’s most interesting letter is from Indian Creek, California, May 7, 1887. In part: “I let a contract to two men to sink Seventy (70) feet below the present level of the Naragansett. I let it for Six (6) dollars per foot and I furnish the timber, the parties to provide their own tools, etc. … I will have to do a few days work on the fixing up around the top of the Shaft. And I think I can with two men one day fix the road so I can get a wagon to the shaft. … It is tough I tell you. I will go to Angels tomorrow to get my Props [?] Harry came with me yesterday but was taken violently drunk at the Dago [indistinct word] and left this morning. I think he will bring up in SF if his money holds a few days longer.”
