Ogden’s "Tour through Upper and Lower Canada" is an observant recounting of the origins of and the continuation of missionary accomplishments in Canada, primarily in St. John’s, Montreal, Quebec and Kingston. Ogden’s writings upon the commercial possibilities of Canada were notable. They were likely of interest to Thomas Jefferson who kept a copy of this book in his library. Reverend John Cosens Ogden (1751–1800) was a New Jersey native. He converted from the Presbyterian faith to the Protestant Episcopal Church and became a traveling missionary when he could not obtain a post as a preacher in Vermont. Ogden wrote various pamphlets attacking what he perceived to be an unhealthy relationship between New England Congregationalists and politicians. As a contributor to William Duane’s The Aurora, Ogden began a campaign against the “New England Illuminati” in defense of Jefferson. Ogden was briefly jailed, a brief suffering emblem for the Jeffersonian cause.
